A weekend trip to Monteverde

After exploring all that La Fortuna has to offer, why not take a trip to the cloud forest of Monteverde! This quaint mountain town has something for every type of traveller, from nature lovers to adrenaline seekers! Here is our itinerary and suggestions from my weekend getaway to Monteverde.

The best option to get to Monteverde from La Fortuna are via Jeep-Boat-Jeep. Cut down on travel time and enjoy a laid back trip to Monteverde. Completely hassle free, choose between morning and afternoon pick up from you accommodation by shuttle and head to the beautiful Lake Arenal. Take a scenic journey across the calm waters of Lake Arenal, taking in the View of Arenal Volcano along the way. Drive through the idyllic countryside, taking time to stop to appreciate the views of the mountains and the pacific. Get settled in you accommodation and go out to town for a meal at one of the many delicious restaurants!

Later in the evening visit Kinkajou to experience a night walk safari. Most animals in the Monteverde forest come alive in the night, so the best way to see them is when the sun sets! Explore trails, looking for wildlife by flashlight with naturalist guides who are able to expertly find animals hidden in the lush jungle. See everything from insects & frogs to armadillos and sloths!!

If you’re going to zip-line in Costa Rica, Monteverde is the place to do it. There are many different companies offering canopy tours in Monteverde, but our favorite is 100% Aventura! Not only do they have incredible canopy tour with a Tarzan swing, they also offer an array of adventurous activities from atv’ing, horseback riding, hanging bridges and bungee jumping! Experience the longest zipline in Latin America and soar across the cloud forest. Go across 11 ziplines, a swinging rope bridge, an exciting rappel, have the option of doing 2 thrilling superman cables and a heart pumping Tarzan swing at the end!

After your exciting, heart pumping, adrenaline rushing experience soaring across the canopy, switch gears and explore the jungle by hanging bridges! Take a walk through the park, suspending yourself over nature as you cross multiple hanging bridges of different heights and lengths. You will also have the chance to climb up a hollow Ficus tree on the way to one of the next bridges along your hike. This is a wondrous way to gain a new perspective from above of this tropical paradise. Walking along paths and over the hanging bridges is a great opportunity to see the native flora and fauna of the area!

Return back to you accommodation to eat lunch and relax before heading out on tour to visit El Trapiche. Take a walk through this family run farm, where you will get to see small scale sugarcane, coffee and cocoa plantations. Learn about the production of coffee, chocolate and sugar from harvest to final product. Take part in demonstrations and get involved in making chocolate and homemade sugarcane sugar. Finish the day with a fresh cup of coffee at the family home!

Enjoy another night in Monteverde, relaxing and taking in the beauty of the sunset over the mountains.

Either take a Jeep-Boat-Jeep back La Fortuna or carry on your adventure from Monteverde!

Our recommendations!

  • Bring a rain jacket and a sweater! The nights can be chilly and there is always chance for rain!

  • Eat at Taco Taco! They offer a wide range of delicious unique dishes and a large selection of craft beers. The food and service were so good, I ate here twice!

  • Visit Treehouse, a unique restaurant/bar that is 2 stories tall, with a tree growing straight through the middle! Enjoy a meal or a drink next to branches beautifully decorated by lights while you listen to live music

  • Hit up Amigos, one of the bars in town that later turns into a club! This is a great place to grab some drinks and go dancing. Amigos is one of the only places in town for nightlife
