10 Epic Things You Can Do For Under $26 in and Around La Fortuna

There's no shortage of things to see in La Fortuna. You could easily blow $100's of dollars in a day on all manner of exciting activities. For those travelling on a budget, it's likely that you'll be on the lookout for more inexpensive alternatives that don't compromise on fun! Fortunately, there's plenty of fun to be had in La Fortuna without breaking the bank. We've compiled a list of 10 epic things you can do in and around La Fortuna for less than $26.

 

 

1. $16 - Relax in the Los Lagos Hotel Hot Springs

 

Many hotels with hot springs around La Fortuna charge non-guests up to $90 per person to use their facilities. Thankfully, the Los Lagos Hotel offers travellers a more budget-friendly alternative. For only $16 you get full access to their nine pools fed directly from surrounding tropical rainforest springs. Cool down with a cocktail from the swim-up bar or visit their onsite crocodile farm, ant farm or frog pond. You can also take a short two-kilometre hike to the hotel's observatory where, on a clear day, you will get a perfect view of the Arenal Volcano.

 

 

2. $25 - Take a 2.5 Hour Rainforest Chocolate Tour

 

Learn all about the chocolate industry in Costa Rica during this 2.5-hour informative rainforest chocolate tour. Learn everything from the history and origin of cocoa and chocolate to the production process and, of course, taste test the final product!

 

 

3. $26 - Explore the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park

 

Enjoy a beautiful self-guided stroll across the two miles of six hanging bridges and ten regular bridges strung up in the rainforest canopy for $26 at Mistico Hanging Bridges Park. The park is part of the biological corridor that allows the flow of species between the Volcanic Mountain Range of Guanacaste and the Tilarán mountain range.

 

Keep your eyes out for over 350 species of birdlife, 700 species of plant life, 120 species of mammals and 250 reptiles and amphibians that call the area home.

 

 

 

4. $20 - Rent a Bike For a Day

 

For $20 you can rent a bike at Arenal Container Hostel and explore independently on two wheels from 6 am to 6 pm - a great way to combine exercise with sightseeing!

 

5. $25 - Rent a Scooter for 4 Hours

 

If you're feeling more adventurous or don't have much pedal-power in you, why not rent a scooter for a few hours? Pick up your motorised wheels at Arenal Container Hostel and head out to explore La Fortuna's surroundings. You could stop off at the free hot springs in the Tabacon river or take a scenic ride to the town of Nuevo Arenal. The price includes one full tank of gas and helmets for up to 2 riders.

 

6. $18 - Visit the La Fortuna Waterfall

 

The La Fortuna Waterfall is a spectacular 200-ft cascade and a must-see when visiting La Fortuna. Fortunately, a visit to the spectacular falls won't break the bank. The entrance fee to the La Fortuna waterfall is $18 USD through the Visitors Centre.

 

 

7. $15 - Explore Mundo Aventura Ecological Tropical Park

 

Entrance to the Mundo Aventura Ecological Tropical park offers great value at $15. It allows you to explore attractions like their butterfly trail or frog pond and to hike 3km through the rainforest to the Mundo Aventura-owned side of the La Fortuna Waterfall. The Maleku Indian Village onsite allows visitors to experience the beliefs, cultures and traditions of indigenous Costa Ricans.

 

8. $3-4 - Sample Authentic Costa Rican Coffee

 

Costa Rica is famous for producing high-quality coffee - known as some of the best in the world! You can enjoy a cup of authentic Costa Rica from many cafes in town for a couple of dollars. We recommend 'My Coffee' and 'Inspira' for a high-quality cup.

 

9. $15 - See Sloths on a Self-Guided Trail

 

Conveniently located only a 15-minute walk from the centre of La Fortuna, the Sloth Watching Trail gives you the opportunity to explore part of a 20-acre property - home to sloths and other exciting wildlife - on a self-guided sloth tour for only $15. Bring binoculars and your best sloth-spotting skills - if you need help to find these easily-camouflaged animals you can hire a guide for extra.

 

 

 

10. $10 - Take a Yoga Class

 

What better way to 'find your Zen' or to relax after a big day of adventuring in La Fortuna than by taking a yoga class. La Fortuna Yoga offers daily drop-in yoga classes for only $10. Both the morning and afternoon sessions are suitable for all levels and the studio is conveniently located in town.
