You Only Have 3 Days in La Fortuna? Here's How You Should Spend It

March 12, 2019

La Fortuna is the kind of destination that you could spend weeks exploring. Surrounded by lush rainforests, jungle waterfalls and the imposing Arenal Volcano, there are an unlimited amount of adventures to be had here. However, most travellers don't have the luxury of unlimited vacations and you might be limited to a short stay. This 3-day itinerary will make sure time won't limit your potential to have an incredible experience in La Fortuna!

Getting Around La Fortuna

Renting a car is a convenient and affordable way to get around La Fortuna. Most attractions are an easy 15-minute drive from town and having your own car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Travellers without a car can rent a scooter or bicycle, take the public bus or catch taxis. Staying in La Fortuna will have you central to restaurants, shopping and tour operators. Most tour operators will conveniently pick you up and drop you off at your accommodation before/after your organized tour.

Day 1

Wake up bright and early and spend your first day exploring the two most popular attractions in La Fortuna - the Adrenal Volcano and La Fortuna Waterfall.

Perhaps La Fortuna's biggest tourist drawcard is the Arenal Volcano. The Arenal Volcano is situated within the 200,00ha Arenal Conservation Area - a region teeming with a wealth of geologic and biological diversity. Arenal is Costa Rica's most active volcano. Although its activity in the last 7 years has been limited to slight rumbles and puffs of steam, the peak is still an imposing and beautiful sight. The Arenal National park is home to great hiking trails, waterfalls and hot springs. For one of the best viewpoints, visit the Arenal Observatory observation deck.

The La Fortuna Waterfall is a spectacular 200-ft cascade. The falls emerge from the thick jungle and plummet into an emerald green rock pool below. Spend a few hours swimming in the cool pools, picnicking by the water's edge and taking that perfect Instagram shot. The entrance fee to the La Fortuna waterfall is $15 USD and access is through the Visitors Centre about 10 minutes from downtown.

Why not combine both attractions in one easy day tour? This Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna Waterfall combo tour lets you experience both sights in one 5 hour experience. After a morning exploring the lava channels of the Arenal Volcano and swimming in the crystal clear pools of the La Fortuna waterfall with an informative guide, you will be served a delicious lunch.

After a morning of activity, spend the afternoon relaxing. Why not take an afternoon yoga class at La Fortuna Yoga?

Grab dinner at Soda Víquez in town - a popular local restaurant serving up delicious Costa Rican fare.
